Beth,

Go back to your original donor agreement, the donor may have stated
items may be sold with the replacements stating they are from the donor.
A credit line like "Courtesy of Mr. & Mrs. John Smith" should suffice
whereas the original artifact might say "From the Collection of Mr. &
Mrs. John Smith". If funds from multiple donors go into the purchase of
an artifact saying "Courtesy of the Acquisition Fund" is appropriate.
If funds from only one donor, whether by monetary donation or sale of an
object donation, are used I would acknowledge the donor.

One more thing - before selling the object be sure it is allowed by the
donor agreement (you don't know what your predecessors may have
promised) and that you have held onto the object for at least two years,
otherwise there may be tax implications for the donor.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Credit Lines for Objects Purchased with
Deaccessioned Funds

<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

For those of you who reference or otherwise attach the credit line of a
deaccessioned and sold object to the object or objects acquired with the
funds realized from the sale: What language do you use in your credit
line? Do you use the original credit line with added verbage? and what
is that verbage? Thank you.
