Tell this person that conservators do not reccommend "feeding" wood. Linseed oil attracts dust, which attracts moisture, as well as leaving a very sticky surface. Other feeders can strip finishes, lift and remove veneers, as well as cause scratching. If the piece needs to look outstanding then a high quality paste wax will be sufficient.

I would tell this volunteer that his suggestions are dully noted, but that the museum has standard guidelines for the care of its artifacts, of which feeding is not one of those standards. Also, just as an employee is expected to maintain museum policy so to a museum volunteer is obligated to abide by the museum's decision. If this is decision with which he disagrees, perhaps he should volunteer elsewhere.

AAM has a pamphlet which covers ethics for museum volunteers and freinds groups. I would suggest you get a copy of it.

I have a volunteer who insists that we should be "feeding" our wood with linseed and/or orange oil. I know that this is not the correct thing to do but have yet to say anything that convinces him. Any suggestions for a tactful way to tell him this is not the best thing for the wood?
