Position: Education Center Associate
(Part-time)
Department: Education Center Operations
Division: Interpretation & Events

Summary:
The Interpretation & Events Division provides meaningful learning opportunities for Mount Vernon's one million annual visitors. Through a diverse portfolio of interpretive experiences, engaging public programs, and special events, we expand each guest's understanding of and appreciation for our nation's Founding Father.  The Office of Education Center Operations, one of the Division's six operating units, manages the Donald W. Reynolds Education Center and the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Learning Center.

Exceed guest expectations: be friendly, respectful, engaging, and flexible; Always remember that this visit may be their first and only; Encourage a meaningful appreciation of George Washington: keep him first and use his unparalleled legacy of character and leadership to inspire; Engage in the mission of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association: take responsibility for continued personal development and commit to collaboration; Care for fellow colleagues and be proud of what we accomplish together.

Responsibilities:
-  Interact with young guests (generally ages 3-8) and their parents/guardians in the Hands-on History Center in order to provide high-quality learning opportunities in a safe and friendly atmosphere.
-  Assist the Education Center Manager with maintaining the Hands-on History Center and its interactives as well as developing new and creative child-friendly programming.
-  Welcome local and visiting teachers in the Teacher Resource Center.
-  Distribute materials and assist with the use of electronic and print resources.
-  Assist the Education Center Manager with the daily care, routine maintenance, and ongoing improvement of the Education Center exhibition.
-  Staff the exhibition for special tours and assist in developing useful and engaging programming.
-  Assist the Education Center Manager in reviewing, evaluating, and improving enrichment materials related to on-site student programs and experiences.

Minimum Qualifications:

  *   Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and clerical skills required
  *   Must work well with a young audience and have a sincere interest in history
  *   Must be willing to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays
  *   Self-starter with an ability to work well under pressure
  *   Ability to work creatively and effectively as a member of a team
  *   Museum and/or teaching experience preferred

Special Requirements:
Must be able to stand/walk for long periods of time
Professional appearance necessary; must comply with departmental dress code
