MASHANTUCKET PEQUOT MUSEUM & RESEARCH CENTER

The Museums Council of New York City is planning a day-long Museum
Professionals Workshop at the recently opened Mashantucket Pequot Museum &
Research Center in Mashantucket, CT. The visit will be on Tuesday July 13,
1999. We will be accompanied by Mike Hanke, the head of Design Division,
the exhibition designers for the museum; and Susan Rodriguez and Don
Weinreich, who led the building design for Polshek Partners Architects.
This will be an extraordinary opportunity to get a museum professional's
look at the "best exhibit of North American Indian materials in the world,
and among the very best anthropological museum exhibits anywhere." (William
Sturtevant, Department of Anthropology, National Museum of Natural History.)
Archaeology Magazine (November/December, 1998) hailed the Museum as "an
outstanding achievement in museum presentation and public education and sure
to set the standard for decades to come."
The 85,000 square feet (!) of permanent exhibitions feature some of the
richest, most imaginative, and most engaging interactive and immersive
exhibition technology I've ever encountered. The 300,000 square foot (!!)
building also houses a research center including a library with an ambitious
acquisitions program and a state-of-the-art archaeology lab. Taken
together, this is among the premier new museums of any kind in America. We
will get an exclusive insider's view of the exhibition and building
development from the key designers and Museum staff.
The Museum is very hospitably providing a bus, an afternoon meal, and
comfortable meeting space for our day. We anticipate a large turnout for
this event, so please register early. We will not set a "per-institution"
limit for registration, as we have in some of our previous popular events.
But we may come back to you with a limit (and a refund) as the event
approaches if we are over-booked.

REGISTRATION INFO:
If you are a museum professional in NYC, a student in the field, or in an
affiliated profession, you are welcome to come to the meeting. We will be
able to fit about 40 people on the bus. If we need to limit the number of
people from any one institution, we will do that as we get closer to the
event.
The Museums Professionals Workshop costs $50.00 per person. Please mail the
