The Joint SAA-ALA-AAM Committee on Archives, Libraries, and Museums (CALM)
invites you to attend our program at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago:

*Collaborating to Preserve Our Heritage*
Saturday, June 29, 2013, 4:30pm to 6:00pm
McCormick Place Convention Center, room S502
http://ala13.ala.org/node/10251

Archives, Libraries, and Museums share a common mission: preserving our
cultural heritage. To accomplish this, archivists, libraries, and museum
professionals must be effective not only in the technical aspects of
preservation but also in the areas of communication, promotion, and
advocacy. In this session, leaders from a variety of organizations and
projects will share tools and resources that you can use to show the value
of your collections and services. Please join us for this motivational and
practical session on Saturday, June 29, 2013 from 4:30pm to 6:00pm in the
McCormick Place Convention Center, room S502.

*Jackie Dooley*, current president of the *Society of American Archivists*,
will provide information about the SAA Advocacy Agenda (
http://www2.archivists.org/initiatives/saa-advocacy-agenda) and the
resources SAA is developing to inform and educate archivists, professional
allies, and community leaders. Other SAA outreach initiatives include
Archives Month, May Day, and the new "I Found It in the Archives!" contest.
Jackie is a program officer for OCLC Research and an internationally
recognized expert in archives and special collections. As president of SAA,
she blogs at http://offtherecord.archivists.org/

*Tom Clareson*, Senior Consultant for Digital & Preservation Services at
LYRASIS, will discuss the *IMLS Connecting to Collections* Initiative and
state-level outreach and awareness efforts to promote care of collections
in libraries, archives, and museums. He will highlight the Maryland
Cooperative Disaster Network, the California Collections Stewardship
Campaign, and the Virgina Top 10 Endangered Artifacts Campaign, all of
which were developed as part of the Connecting to Collections Initiative.
In addition to his work at LYRASIS, Tom has served as a representative
from the Society of American Archivists to the Joint Committee on Archives,
Libraries, and Museums, and he currently serves on the Board of Trustees of
Heritage Preservation, the national institute for preservation and
conservation advocacy.

*Tamara Hemmerlein* from the Indiana Historical Society will provide
information about the *Hoosier Heritage Alliance*, a collaborative project
developed under the IMLS Connecting to Collections Initiative. One of the
products of this project is "Endangered Heritage," a traveling exhibit
explaining the need for collections care at all heritage organizations. The
exhibit is designed to educate local communities and potential funders
about the need for good collections stewardship and to encourage
contributions for collections care. Other project activities include a
Collections Care poster, Collections Advisor monthly email, regional
training conferences, site visits, and an online graphic novel, Deteriora
and the Agents of Destruction. Tamara is the Indiana state team leader for
the American Association for State and Local History and is active in the
American Alliance of Museums.

*John Chrastka*, founder of *EveryLibrary*, will offer tools, techniques,
and resources to help you identify and communicate with leaders in your
community. EveryLibrary (everylibrary.org) is the first national
organization dedicated exclusively to political action at a local level to
create, renew, and protect public funding for libraries of all types. John
is a partner in AssociaDirect, a Chicago-based consultancy focused on
supporting associations in membership recruitment, conference, and
governance activities and is the former Director for Membership Development
at the American Library Association.

This session is sponsored by the joint SAA-ALA-AAM Committee on Libraries,
Archives, and Museums (CALM), which is charged with fostering closer
cooperation among the member organizations and our professional allies,
including common standards and best practices. The Committee annually
schedules sessions on a common topic at the national conferences of the
member organizations. For more information about CALM, feel free to join us
at our committee meeting at ALA (see http://ala13.ala.org/node/10793 for
time and location).
