INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Pejepscot Historical Society, one of Maine's oldest historical
societies, announces two three-month internships for summer 2005. PHS
operates two seasonal historic houses (the Skolfield-Whittier House and
the Joshua Chamberlain Museum) and the year-round Pejepscot Museum
(featuring changing exhibits and research facilities for the local
history of Brunswick, Topsham, and Harpswell) with a permanent staff of
four, seasonal employees, and 50 volunteers. Summertime attendance
typically exceeds 6,000 visitors.

Offered since 1987, the internships provide broad experience in all
aspects of museum operations: research, collection management,
interpretation, program development, publicity, administration, and
merchandising. In addition, each intern will have the primary
responsibility for organizing and implementing a project that will
require up to one-half of their time. The expectations of the intern
are to:

*	complete a special project which is the major focus of the
internship
*	give tours of historic house for the equivalent of one day per
week
*	attend all Board committee meetings
*	assist in the PHS office by answering phones, aiding
researchers, greeting visitors, and opening and closing the museum

One internship will focus on the Skolfield-Whittier House paper
collections. The intern will have the primary responsibility for
organizing and implementing an archival project which involves proper
storage of the papers.

The special project for the second internship is to conduct a survey to
determine the needs and interests of the residents of the three towns.
The survey is an essential part of the MAP III self-assessment program.
The results help PHS determine how to better serve the community.

Individuals with a background in history, art history, historic
preservation, education, library and archival science, public
administration, or museum studies are encouraged to apply. Start and
end dates are flexible between May 15 and September 15. This is a FT
position (37.5 hours per week), Tuesday through Saturdays. Compensation
range is $3,375 to $4,050 based on experience. There are no benefits.

Application is by letter describing interest and experience with museums
or nonprofits, a resume including three references, and official college
and/or graduate school transcripts. Minimum BA degree preferred but
students entering their senior year of undergraduate study will be
considered. To apply, send resume by March 31, 2005 to: Executive
Director, Pejepscot Historical Society, 159 Park Row, Brunswick, ME
04011. Please indicate which internship the application is for.
