Hi Jill
We are in the process of developing an open source database system for natural history collections called Specify 6 using Java as the platform. A portion of the system, known as the WorkBench is available for download now while the full version will be released at the beginning of next year. The project will be entirely open source and is seen as a collections management platform and the developers are hoping that third parties will write pluggable applications for the platform for their individual discipline needs. You can find out more about Specify 6 at www.specifysoftware.org/specify6/. The present version of Specify (Version 5.2.2) developed in Delphi with SQL server as its back end is also available but is not open source.
Please feel free to contact us if you require more information
All the best
Andy

Subject: Open-source databases
Does anyone know if open-source collections databases exist?
I'd be interested in hearing about databases you've used-- even if they required alot of customization.
Kind Regards,
Jill Keehner
