I fully believe in Hobo data loggers, especially if you currently are using older models. The Boxcar Pro software is for the older loggers and you need the newer HOBOware Pro software for the new loggers. The UX100-011 logger recommended by Liz costs $125 at single quantities and has an RH accuracy of 2.5%. The UX100-003 has RH accuracy of 3.5% and costs $89. It is fine for virtually all monitoring projects. In fact, knowing a difference of 10% is all that is necessary in low-tech applications. Yes, if you are the Museum of Fine Arts or the Metropolitan Museum, you may need better tolerances (only since you have high-tech HVAC systems that are technically capable of better control). But for the vast majority of all the rest of you, the 003 logger is fine at a lesser cost. I recommend the Hobo loggers since thousands of historic house and other low-budget museums are using them, and any consultants you use will be familiar with them and not have to learn some new software to give you reasonable advice from the monitoring results. Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you Liz, that is very helpful. I suspect the wireless ones won’t work for us either, because of network and IT infrastructure issues. I’ll check out your suggested resources.

  Tara,

We recently used grant funding from the NEH to replace our old "hockey puck" HOBOs with Onset's new UX100-011 models. I debated between on-line and standalone models as well, but after attending some webinars, I decided that wireless wouldn't work for us. I would suggest the following resources as you try to make that determination for your own institution:

Wireless Dataloggers (Connecting to Collections Webinar): http://www.connectingtocollections.org/online-event-wireless-dataloggers/

Choosing the Datalogger That Is Right For You (Connecting to Collections Webinar):

  Hope this helps!

  Hello everyone,

I’m looking into replacing our dataloggers because several have gone out of calibration tolerance in the last year. What we have now are Onset HOBO dataloggers for temperature/relative humidity. I did a little research and I find that our exact models are no longer available, and there are a number of models available now. but I have no idea which ones to get. I don’t know whether to get ones with internal or external sensors or both, or ones that are web-based or stand-alone. We currently use Boxcar Pro 4.3, and I think it might be wise to stick with something that works with that software, but I’ve had trouble figuring out the best one to get. Does anyone with expertise in this area have an opinion? Or can anyone recommend a different favorite type of datalogger? I’d appreciate your help, and feel free to contact me by the email address below.

  Thank you!
