POSITION DESCRIPTION

N.B.: This is a specially funded project position, guaranteed full-time
through June 2005 and half-time through September 2005.  We are hopeful of
raising the funds to keep it full-time through September 2005, and it is
possible that this will become permanent.

TITLE:  Archival Processor/Exhibit Curator
SUPERVISORS:                    Edward T. Morman, College Librarian
                                Richard Fraser, Curator of Archives and
Manuscripts
FUNCTION OF POSITION:   processes an archival collection, curates an
exhibit, and provides public services for library readers.

LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY:  This is an entry-level position.  The successful
candidate will work closely with all members of the library staff, and will
from time to time be called on to supervise support staff members on special
projects.

TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:  MLS or advanced degree in history preferred.  We will
consider applicants who are candidates for advanced degrees in librarianship
or history (preferably history of science or medicine) programs.  For
students in library science programs, graduate work in history is preferred.
For students in history programs, library experience is preferred.

SKILLS:  We are looking for a bright, hard-working, well-organized
self-starter who is authentically interested in history and in developing
skills and gaining experience in two fascinating areas of library work.
The successful candidate will also have basic reference skills and the
ability to work with the public.   Preferred skills include (a) familiarity
with medical history and/or eighteenth-century European and American
history, and (b) reading knowledge of French.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  
        1.      Supervised by the College's Curator of Manuscripts, the
successful candidate will assist in arranging and writing a finding aid for
a large collection of material recently deposited at the College by the
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
        2.      Working with the College Librarian, his administrative
assistant, other College staff members, and contractors, the successful
candidate will take curatorial responsibilities for a library-based
exhibition called "The Medical World of Benjamin Franklin."  This will
entail (a) research into Franklin's ideas about health and his relations
with the medical profession (b) identifying appropriate objects for exhibit,
(c) preparing the text for the exhibit (including the overall script and
labels for particular books and artifacts), and (d) arranging for the loan
of objects to be borrowed from other repositories.
        3.      The successful candidate will also carry out public service
and reference duties, including assisting on-site patrons, photocopying, and
answering reference questions received by letter, telephone and email.
