*Museum and Exhibition Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago
Awarded $100,000 to Support Graduate Students of Color*

Chicago, Illinois – September 2017

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has awarded the Museum and
Exhibition Studies (MUSE) graduate program at the University of Illinois at
Chicago (UIC) $100,000 for the proposal titled, “Toward Cultural Diversity
in Cultural Institutions.” The Humanities Access Grant from the NEH will be
used to support Graduate Assistantships offering stipends and tuition
waivers for two graduate students of color enrolled in the two-year,
interdisciplinary Master’s Program. The first student to receive these
funds began the program in fall 2017 and the second recipient will be a
member of the 2018 incoming cohort.

MUSE is an interdisciplinary and justice-centered program that emphasizes
the evolving social and political contexts of cultural institutions and
provides students with engagements essential to careers in diverse
positions.

These new NEH-funded scholarships for students of color are essential
because, despite the increasing diversity of our nation, museums employ a
homogenous, disproportionately Non-Hispanic white population. For example,
in art museums, 2015 Andrew W. Mellon Foundation research shows that
“Non-Hispanic White staff dominate the job categories…associated with the
intellectual and educational mission of museums, including those of
curators, conservators, educators, and leadership”. In those positions,
using census categories, “84% of staff identify as Non-Hispanic White, with
6% Asian, 4% Black, 3% Hispanic White, and 3% Two or More Races. These
proportions do not come close to representing the diversity of the American
population.”

To address this national problem, MUSE is committed to recruiting,
admitting and supporting strong applicants from groups underrepresented in
our cultural institutions. These efforts have been successful; MUSE’s most
recent graduating cohort was over 78% people of color, in contrast with
national museum studies program student demographics, which, according to
2010 research, are 80% white.

The MUSE 2018 application cycle opens on September 1, 2017. For those
interested in being considered for the NEH scholarship, application
materials must be received by Dec. 15, 2017.
