I have always paid the special exhibition fee on top of the regular
admission fee; I would hardly call this price gouging.   The standard
admission fee gives you access to the regular exhibits, and the extra fee
gives you access to the special exhibit.  I don't see anything unusual about
this at all.

I doubt that even the $8 special admission fee brought the special
exhibition into 'profitable' status.  Special traveling exhibitions can be
quite expensive (tens of thousands of dollars) and sometimes the only way to
recoup even a portion of the expense is with an additional entry fee.
