Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens

Collections Digitization Internship

Fall 2015

About Hillwood

Founded by American collector and heiress to the Post cereal empire Marjorie Merriweather Post, Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens is one of the premier art collector's museums in the United States. The museum features the most comprehensive collection of Russian imperial art outside of Russia and a world-renowned collection of eighteenth-century French decorative art and furnishings. The collection contains significant holdings in the areas of furniture, porcelain, textiles, metalwork and paintings including Fabergé eggs, Russian porcelain, Russian Orthodox icons, Beauvais tapestries, and Sèvres. Other collections include 20th century costumes and material culture artifacts related to Mrs. Post.

Internship Tasks

As part of Hillwood's goal to digitize its 20,000+ piece collection, the collections intern will work directly with the Registrar to identify and digitize existing object photography and upload it to the museum's DAM (Piction) and the collections database (Rediscovery) with the appropriate metadata. The intern will work with the registrar and digital asset manager to assess the current collection, establish digitization standards and create a digitization plan. The intern will gain experience in digitization, database entry and management, assigning metadata, using collection records and planning for collections digitization.

As time allows, other potential projects include collections inventory and assisting with general tasks of the busy Registrar's office including loans, exhibitions and care of the permanent collection.

Experience/Skills

Candidates should be currently enrolled in a museum related graduate program, or a humanities/art related undergraduate program and possess an interest in museum collections/registration work.

Duration/Pay

Internships are part-time up to 3 days per week. This internship position is for college credit only. Hours are flexible and can be adjusted to accommodate the intern's schedule. Hillwood is a 15 min walk from the Van Ness or Cleveland Park metro stations. Free parking is available onsite.

Application Process

Please email letter of interest and resume to MJ Meredith, Registrar, at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> by August 15th, 2015.
