George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate, Museum and Gardens has four positions available within our Historic Preservation and Collections Department:  Deputy Director for Architecture, Architectural Conservator, Preservation Specialist and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Manager.

Introduction:
As the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association moves into the 21st century, the Association seeks to further raise the importance of historic preservation activities at George Washington's estate by judiciously adding new talent to form a unified team charged with developing and executing new plans focused on Mount Vernon's core preservation mission.  Mount Vernon invites applications for the following positions, some of which are new to the Association's preservation efforts.  All are full-time positions with accompanying benefits. Deputy Director for Architecture
Historic Mount Vernon seeks a highly motivated architectural historian to fill the newly created position of Deputy Director for Architecture.  This individual will oversee the documentation and preservation of the historic structures at George Washington's Mount Vernon.
Responsibilities:
Leading Mount Vernon's architectural research, conservation, and restoration efforts for more than 20 historic structures and overseeing the documentation of this endeavor both digitally and through publications and reports.  The Deputy Director oversees the work of the Architectural Conservator, Preservation Specialist, and additional full and part-time staff.  The Deputy Director works under the supervision of the Director for Historic Preservation and Research within Mount Vernon's Historic Preservation and Collections Department.

 Qualifications:
*                  Must hold an MA degree in architectural history, historic preservation or architecture
*                  At least three years experience working as an architectural historian
*                  Demonstrated knowledge of the philosophy and fundamental principles of historic preservation required, including the identification, evaluation and documentation of historic architecture through both archival research and field work
*                  Familiarity with 18th-century building methods and materials and a demonstrated record of documentation and publication of architectural research

 Architectural Conservator
Historic Mount Vernon seeks a highly motivated historic preservation professional to fill the position of Architectural Conservator.  This individual will oversee the conservation of the historic structures at George Washington's Mount Vernon.
Responsibilities:
Overseeing a comprehensive program of maintenance for more than 20 historic structures, directing conservation of historic building fabric, and managing full and part-time staff as required.  The Architectural Conservator works under the supervision of the Deputy Director for Architecture within Mount Vernon's Historic Preservation and Collections Department.
Qualifications:
*                  Must hold a MA or MS degree in historic preservation, architectural history, or architecture, with course work in architectural conservation
*                  At least three years experience working in the historic preservation field
*                  Demonstrated familiarity with 18th-century building methods and materials, experience in their repair and replacement
*                  Proficiency in carpentry, painting, plastering and / or masonry is required

Preservation Specialist
Historic Mount Vernon seeks a highly motivated historic preservation professional to fill the position of Preservation Specialist. This individual will assist in the preservation and research of the historic structures at George Washington's Mount Vernon.

Responsibilities:
Coordinating a comprehensive program of maintenance, conducting research and annual assessments of the historic structures, and working with various craftspeople, both employees of Mount Vernon and outside contractors, on all preservation and restoration projects for more than 20 historic structures.  The Preservation Specialist works under the supervision of the Deputy Director for Architecture within Mount Vernon's Historic Preservation and Collections Department.
Qualifications:
*                  Candidates should hold a BA degree with coursework in historic preservation
*                  Familiar with 18th-century building methods and materials
*                  A demonstrated proficiency in carpentry, painting, plastering, and/or masonry is preferred

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Manager

Historic Mount Vernon seeks Historic Mount Vernon seeks a creative historic preservation professional to fill the newly created position of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Manager.  This individual will oversee the documentation of the historic structures, archaeological sites and cultural landscape at George Washington's Mount Vernon.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include developing an integrated approach to historic preservation and cultural landscape data to better understand the evolution of, and manage the infrastructure and cultural resources at, the historic house museum.  The GIS Manager reports to the Director of Historic Preservation and Research in the Department of Historic Preservation and Collections.  The position will work in close collaboration with the archaeological, architectural, operations and maintenance and horticultural staffs in creating this new method of documenting Mount Vernon.
Qualifications:
*                  Hold an MA in landscape architecture, anthropology, history, historic preservation or a closely related field
*                  Extensive experience working with GIS, preferably at a historic site
*                  Excellent communication skills required
*                  Demonstrated ability to think creatively
*                  Ability to work as part of a team and independently
