            STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF NORTH DAKOTA
                2000 SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The State Historical Society of North Dakota is offering two summer
internships in museum studies.  Each intern will gain overall knowledge of
the State Historical Society, as well as intensive work experience in a
specialty area.

The State Historical Society of North Dakota, based in Bismarck, strives to
identify, preserve, interpret and promote the heritage of North Dakota and
its people.  Several features make the Society the premier  history
institution in North Dakota.  The State Historical Society of North Dakota
operates the North Dakota Heritage Center, which is the state’s largest
museum and the only one in the state accredited by American Association of
Museums, operates 56 historic sites and a regional museum, maintains a
collection of over one million two- and three-dimensional objects, serves
more than 250,000 people annually from around the world.

All applicants for any of the internships should demonstrate the following:
 general knowledge of the humanities and/or history, organizational skills,
strong communication skills, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and
the ability to work independently and with a variety of people.

Interested students should submit application materials no later than March
31, 2000.   Interviews and selections will be completed by April 15, 2000.

reference from an academic advisor, and where required, a writing sample, to

ASSISTANT REGISTRAR/COLLECTIONS INTERN

Scope of work: Assisting Registrar in the search for collection data and
entry of that data into the division’s computer system, utilizing ARGUS
software.   Extensive experience will be gained in the use and capabilities
of the ARGUS system.  Additional responsibilities and opportunities include
working with the Curator of Collections Management in collections processing
from the potential acquisition phase through the entry of information into
the computer system.

Products: Data entered into the collections computer system and completed
worksheets and documents related to artifact processing.  A daily journal
and experience summary will be required along with on-site training and
supplemental reading.

Schedule: June-August 2000.
   Ten forty-hour weeks(400 hours), maximum. Summer schedule is
flexible.

Location: North Dakota Heritage Center, Bismarck, ND

Prerequisites: Graduate-level student in U.S. History, American History,
Anthropology, Museum Studies, or other related field.  Education or
experience in museum collections  registration/management preferred.

Stipend: Graduate student stipend available


EDUCATION PROGRAMS INTERN

Scope of work:   Assisting the Education and Interpretation staff in daily
activities.  Includes assisting with the overall planning and implementation
of the scheduled interpretative programs.  May also include work with
publications, graphic design, and volunteer services.

Products: Special projects or areas of investigation will be arranged
to address the intern’s area of interest.  A daily journal and
project/experience summary will be required, along with on-site training and
supplemental reading.

Schedule: June - August 2000

Location: North Dakota Heritage Center, Bismarck, ND

Prerequisites:   Upper-level undergraduate or graduate-level student in
American History, Public History, Education, or other related field.

coordinating credit requirements with their faculty advisor and with the
