Each intern will gain overall knowledge of the State Historical Society, as well as intensive work experience in a specialty area. The State Historical Society of North Dakota, based in Bismarck, strives to identify, preserve, interpret and promote the heritage of North Dakota and its people. Several features make the Society the premier history institution in North Dakota. The State Historical Society of North Dakota operates the North Dakota Heritage Center, which is the state’s largest museum and the only one in the state accredited by American Association of Museums, operates 56 historic sites and a regional museum, maintains a collection of over one million two- and three-dimensional objects, serves more than 250,000 people annually from around the world. All applicants for any of the internships should demonstrate the following: general knowledge of the humanities and/or history, organizational skills, strong communication skills, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and the ability to work independently and with a variety of people. Extensive experience will be gained in the use and capabilities of the ARGUS system. Additional responsibilities and opportunities include working with the Curator of Collections Management in collections processing from the potential acquisition phase through the entry of information into the computer system. Products: Data entered into the collections computer system and completed worksheets and documents related to artifact processing. A daily journal and experience summary will be required along with on-site training and supplemental reading. Schedule: June-August 2000. Ten forty-hour weeks(400 hours), maximum.
