I am pleased to share the news that the Smithsonian American Art Museum has presented the 2018 Frost Essay Award to Dr. Monica Steinberg for her article, "Naming: Heteronymy and the Imaginary Artists of George Herms," which appeared in the summer 2018 issue (vol. 32, no. 2), of American Art, the scholarly journal co-published by the museum and the University of Chicago Press. Steinberg is a postdoctoral fellow in the Society of Fellows in the Humanities at the University of Hong Kong.
The Frost Essay Award is presented annually to the author of the most distinguished peer-reviewed article published in the previous volume of American Art. The prize recognizes excellence in scholarship in the field of American art history. Each year, a rotating jury of three members of the American Art editorial board reviews articles in the journal, seeking especially to honor an essay that advances the understanding of the history of the arts in the United States, demonstrates original research, expresses fresh ideas, and is clearly written, accessible in its language, and marked by a gracefulness of exposition. This year's jurors were Mary K. Coffey of Dartmouth College; Rachael Z. DeLue of Princeton University; and Erica Hirshler of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
