Curator of Collections
The Rockwell Museum of Western Art
Corning, New York

Our museum client, The Rockwell Museum of Western Art, seeks an experienced
curator to assume overall responsibility for the acquisition, research, care
and interpretation of the collections, and to organize exhibitions that will
contribute to enriching the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the
variety of cultures and ideas the collections represent and evoke. Founded
in 1976 and located in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of upstate New
York, the Museum houses a comprehensive collection of Western Art,
containing Native American art and artifacts as well as masterworks by such
artists as Remington, Russell, Bierstadt, Moran, and Catlin. Recent works by
Native American and other emerging Western artists are being collected to
bring perspective and breadth to the collections.  

The Curator of Collections reports to the Executive Director and hires,
trains and supervises curatorial, registrarial and educational staff. This
position requires experience and knowledge of current museological practices
including: cultivating collectors, accessioning and deaccesssioning, and
conceptualizing exhibitions that will interest and attract the Museum's
current and potential audiences. The Curator of Collections adheres to
rigorous standards of scholarship, contributes to grants and fundraising
efforts, and has a commitment to the public dimension of museums in their
communities.  The ideal candidate will have outstanding management and
supervisory skills, and proven research, writing and communication skills.
Ability to both lead and participate in project teams and committees is
essential.  M.A. in Art History, with in-depth knowledge of American Art and
an emphasis on Western and/or Native American Art is required.  A minimum of
5 years museum curatorial experience, with significant knowledge of
curatorial practices, collections management, exhibition development and
public programs is required. Salary is competitive for the region with
