INFORMATION MANAGEMENT ASSISTANT

Museums and Collections Services, an innovative service
unit of the University of Alberta, seeks a dynamic and
versatile individual to provide assistance with the Collections
Access Project.  This opportunity will facilitate the campus
community's use of Multi MIMSY (Oracle-based relational
database management software for collections use) as a
creative, cooperative solution for enhancing  access to, and
maintenance, presentation and distribution of, information
related to the University's 17 million specimens, artifacts and
works of art. These objects are housed in 30 collections in
various academic units and buildings across campus where
they best serve the teaching and research needs of students,
instructors and researchers.

The Information Management Assistant will work in a
team-based collaborative environment, reporting to the
Collections Management Coordinator of Museums and
Collections Services. Responsible for providing assistance
with Multi MIMSY activities, the Information Management
Assistant will be responsible for looking after specific
delegated assignments and duties related to:
 -communicating with various University groups (collection
curators and associated staff, Computing and Network Services
staff, departmental/faculty network administrators);
-determining collection site specific hardware and software
requirements;
-mapping previously computerized data in preparation for
conversion into Multi MIMSY;
-the data conversion process;
-confirming object documentation backlogs;
-data entry and enhancement within Multi MIMSY, and object
storage clean up activities;
-Multi MIMSY training activities; and
-facilitating regular interest group meetings to ensure the
tool is enhancing teaching, learning and research activities.
Other duties include research and report writing, funding application
preparation, and providing assistance with the development and
maintenance of collection site specific documentation standards
manuals and database users' guides.

The ideal candidate will have a university degree with a minimum
of two years relevant experience. A broad understanding of
client/server computing environments and the ability to
troubleshoot is required. Knowledge of collections management
activities within a museum environment, the Canadian Heritage
Information Network, and relational database management
systems, preferably Oracle-based, is an asset. The candidate
will have excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to
deal effectively with people of varying experience and expertise.
Excellent written and oral communication, and group facilitation
skills are also required.

The monthly salary for this position is $2,565 - $3253.
