THE TECH MUSEUM OF INNOVATION
FULL-TIME POSITION AVAILABLE
Exhibit Engineers (2 now and 2 more in several months)

The mission of The Tech Museum of Innovation is to serve as an educational
resource that engages people of all ages and backgrounds in exploring and
experiencing technologies affecting their lives, and to inspire young
people to become innovators in developing technologies of the future.

Join a dynamic, creative team operating one of America's premiere science
and technology museums.  Participate in The Tech Museum of Innovation's
major expansion into a new facility scheduled for opening in 1998, in the
heart of Silicon Valley.  The Tech is seeking innovative and experienced
candidates with a diverse technical background and/or fabrication/shop
experience to maintain, refurbish and/or upgrade the museum's current and
future exhibits.  These are full-time, exempt positions reporting to the
Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities:
* Monitors and maintains an effective spare parts inventory and general
material supply.  Orders supplies.  Recommends and evaluates new parts or
materials.
* Monitors and maintains the function and safe operation of Engineering
tools, equipment, facilities and workshop.
* Troubleshoots and repairs all failures in any equipment or system having
its root cause in the application of electronics, precision mechanics,
hydraulic and fluid systems, and computer control systems.  Installs and
performs preventative maintenance on these systems, as needed.  Coordinates
outside vendors or contractors on needed repairs, as required.
* Performs precision alignments/assemblies and tests associated with
installation, relocation, refurbishment, or modification of all machinery
and equipment.
* Maintains and updates preventative maintenance programs and schedules,
including documentation on repairs and modifications.  Records and
maintains historical documents and failure analysis data to improve
equipment reliability.
* Overhauls and/or upgrades new or existing exhibits and equipment,
including design of necessary parts or software.  May include hardware or
software fabrication as necessary.
* Installs, maintains, upgrades or modifies exhibit support systems and
infrastructure, including computer control, vacuum and pneumatic, and sound
and video.
* Interacts with other departments to provide technical and facility
services and support.  Interacts with volunteers.  Provides guidance and
light supervision for Exhibit Technicians.
* Responsible for the security and safety of the facility, including theft
and vandalism prevention of equipment.
* Maintains and services the facility, and facility equipment and
machinery, including HVAC, power lighting, building and grounds.
Coordinates outside vendors or contractors on needed repairs, as required.

Experience/Skills Needed:
* Degree in engineering or equivalent experience.
* Must be reliable, dependable, and able to work closely as an Engineering
team member.  Ability to communicate effectively.
* Experience in the use of power tools, shop equipment, and other heavy
work tools.
* Knowledge of safe shop procedures and equipment use required.
* Experience in electronic test and maintenance, and use of test equipment;
able to read electronic schematics and specifications.
* Experience in wood, plastics and plexiglass, and/or metal fabrication;
able to read blueprints and construction diagrams.
* Able to repair complex failures in exhibit equipment.
* Experience with personal computers or workstations and/or supporting
equipment or software.  Programming or network  operation experience is
required.
* Valid California driver's license and good driving record.
* Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs. may be required.
* Must be available for a flexible and variable work schedule including
weekends, holidays, and evenings.
