2010 Internships at Montgomery County PA Parks and Historic Sites

 

Curatorial/Cataloging, Environmental Educational, Planning, Visitor
Services, Event Planning, and Historical Interpretation Internships
available

 

Introduction:

Montgomery County PA Department of Parks and Heritage Services (PHS)
oversees 6,000 acres which includes three historic sites, six public
parks and nearly 60 miles of trails.  The Department serves more than 2
million visitors annually.  Through our internship program, we will
provide practical, high quality experiences that will help you achieve
your highest academic and career oriented goals.

 

Descriptions:

Curatorial/Cataloging (3) - Curatorial Interns will work under the
direction of senior staff to document a variety of collections at the
Montgomery County historic sites.  Daily duties may include the
cataloging, organization and storage of collections including textiles,
and 18th - 20th century artifacts working with PastPerfect software.

 

Environmental Educational (2) - Summer intern will primarily assist with
camps teaching children in grades 1-6 about the natural world and man's
interactions.  Additional activities include work with butterfly and
sensory gardens, and invasive plant removal projects.
Fall/Winter/Spring intern will assist with school programming for pre-K,
elementary & middle school students.   

 

Planning (1) - Intern will work with PHS & the Montgomery County
Planning Commission to assist with mapping of PHS parks, historic sites
and trails, site easements, and cataloging the department's collection
of maps and architectural plans.

 

Visitor Services (1) - Intern will work with senior department staff to
examine the scope of programs offered, the existing and potential
audiences and markets, and collation of basic surveys.

 

Event Planning (1) - Work with Region Manager to develop, coordinate and
implement major events at parks and historic sites.

 

Historical Interpretation (1) - Intern will have opportunities to
demonstrate early American crafts, participate in public events, conduct
site tours, and daily operations of an historic site.

 

Qualification:  Interns should be pursuing degrees in American History,
Museum Studies, Planning, Education, Environmental Sciences, or Public
Relations and have good written, verbal and interpersonal skills.

 

These are unpaid internships in the Philadelphia suburban region.
Length of internship and hours worked per week are flexible.  Must have
transportation available.
