Are your collections at risk?
The Heritage Health Index reports that many collections in our museums
and libraries are at risk. Preservation planning and implementation can
prevent the loss of these collections.
Do you have a preservation program in place at your institution? Are
you putting preservation skills into action?
Join Nylink and the NEDCC (Northeast Document Conservation Center) for a
series of preservation workshops that can help you to save your valuable
collections. Attend all three workshops and receive a 20% discount!
Getting Started with Preservation: Planning a Practical Program
Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at Nylink offices in Albany, NY
http://nylink.org/events/prac_pres08.cfm
This program is designed to help participants assess and prioritize the
preservation problems of their institutions. The critical role of the
environment (temperature, relative humidity, natural and artificial
light, and pollutants) will be explored along with storage and handling
procedures that can extend the life expectancy of collections.
Prioritizing for preservation action is an important skill, so
participants will also conduct a "virtual" preservation needs assessment
of an actual site. Then, in small groups, they will develop an action
plan for the institution that incorporates long- and short-term goals.
This workshop is designed for staff of libraries, archives, historical
societies, or other cultural institutions as a basic introduction to
preservation issues.
Collections Care
Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at Nylink Offices, Albany, NY
http://nylink.org/events/care08.cfm
Collections care looks at holdings and stacks maintenance on a more
detailed level. The nature of materials and agents of deterioration are
reviewed, programs in environmental monitoring and pest management are
discussed, and examples of enclosures are analyzed. Students also learn
how to identify priority collections and discuss the importance of staff
and user education and creating written reading room policies and
processing guidelines. Students will participate in basic collections
care activities such as handling oversize materials and practicing safe
ways of retrieving and shelving books and boxes.
This workshop is designed for staff and volunteers who are involved in
libraries, archives, historical societies, or other cultural
institutions with primarily bound materials and are ready to start
implementing aspects of their preservation plans.
Preservation Holdings Maintenance
Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at Nylink Offices, Albany, NY
http://nylink.org/events/holdings08.cfm
Holdings maintenance - simple procedures that can prolong the life of
records - is essential to any preservation program. These
collection-level actions, such as upgrading boxes and folder and
removing metal fasteners, can be easily incorporated into daily tasks.
This workshop will examine ways to implement a successful
holdings-maintenance program at minimal cost. Topics will include:
* Levels of collections care
* Nature of materials and causes of deterioration
* Storage and handling options
* Procedures involved in holdings maintenance
* Selection for preservation
This course is designed for staff and volunteers who are involved in
archival activities and would like an introduction to preservation
issues and maintenance procedures.
