Folks, this question and the responses totalled 13 posts--this one is #14.
The answer could have been found in an ordinary dictionary, obviating an
appeal to this list. It's interesting that some will complain about an
overabundance of messages--on a variety of topics--from a single member, but
will tolerate a plethora of posts on a single topic which are basically
unnecessary. Oh, I know, the theme provided an opportunity for attempts at
humor, which I don't begrudge anyone, and the information about the British
usage is helpful--but I'm always amazed by the reluctance of educated people
to consult a dictionary first.

But don't mind me--I just get particularly grumpy on Fridays, and lighten up
on Saturdays (I have an hour to go).
