From what I understand, if you are speaking of archiving photographs,
the_standard_at this time is to archive them onto Kodak Photo CD, which will
give you the highest quality and thus allow you to use the image in a wider
variety of ways down the line. This means going to a commercial provider,
which may mean working from a duplicate photo or transparency, rather than
the original.

There are a couple of digitizing projects going on in Alaska, and from what
I understand,a key aspect of this process has to do with what your intended
use of the images will be. How are people going to access this information?
When you get into this question in detail it bears heavily on how you go
about designing the project.
