- Alberta's Cultural Tribute to Canada's Peace Keepers, June 1-12, 2000,
Canadian Forces Base, Edmonton.
- VAAA received funding for the following project in 1998/99:
1. Yasuo Terada, Touring Artist from Japan. - Hythe potter, Bibi Clement,
was inspired to bring Yasuo Terada to Canada after meeting him while
attending an international ceramic workshop in Japan. Yasuo Terada is an
active, prolific artist-potter, production potter, curator, and teacher. He
builds his own kilns and digs his own clay. Born in Seto, Japan, an ancient
pottery centre established in the 14th C., he is internationally known as a
master of the Oribe style. The characteristic pottery of Seto, Oribe ware
has thick opaque glazes patterned in green and blue. Terada's Alberta tour
was "all about sharing". He worked with clay artists in workshops, clay
pit visits, exhibitions, lectures, studio visits and informal discussions.
Terada's initial stop was Medicine Hat, where he was the first artist in
Medalta's new Artist-in-Residence program. At Edmonton's visual arts
festival The Works, Terada gave a slide presentation at the Edmonton Art
Gallery and mounted an exhibition including pieces he had produced in
Medicine Hat. Potters' guilds in Grande Prairie, Beaverlodge, Dawson Creek,
Elmsworth and Fort St. John also saw workshops and slide/lecture
presentations on Terada's own work and contemporary and historic Japanese
ceramics. At Series, the visual arts summer school for adults at Red Deer
College, he taught both Japanese wheelthrowing and tool making. Funding was
received through the Canada Council for the Arts Visual Arts Section
program of Assistance to Visiting Artists, Architects, Critics and
Curators. ("Sharing a Passion for Clay". Legacy. Nov.1998-Jan.1999).
2. VAAA Website development - www.visualartsalberta.ab.ca Although still
under development, VAAA's website is and will be a vehicle for information
about VAAA and its services as well as various links to relevant arts
information in the Province of Alberta. Funding was received through the
Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA).
3. Senior Artists' Initiative - a recent on-going project to develop
video, audio and still photography material on senior Alberta artists.
Research has begun on the initial group of artists - Euphemia McNaught,
John Snow and Alex Janvier. Initial funding was received from the Alberta
Foundation for the Arts.

v Karen Brownlee, Lethbridge, was the Alberta recipient of the Prairie
Heritage Preservation Award from Davis & Henderson Intercheques, which
honours individuals and organizations who demonstrate and continue to
preserve prairie heritage in a manner which makes it available to the
Canadian Public. One $500 award was given out per prairie province.
Brownlee received the award for her series of watercolors "Rural Prairie
Communities"
v Artist in Residence Theodora Harasymiw begins her residency at St.
Basil's, Edmonton after completing a mural, reminiscent of early Christian
art, at St. Boniface Catholic Elementary School, Edmonton (Edmonton
Examiner 13 Nov.1998).
v Isabel Perry, author of Euphemia McNaught: Artist of the Peace Country,
and sister to Euphemia McNaught, the well-known Peace Country artist,
passed away February 8, one month before her 100th birthday.

Þ Governor General Romeo LeBlanc will launch Canadian Heritage Interactive
Journey (CHIJ) April 15. CHIJ is a nine-week exploration of Canada by three
cycling teams, who will travel to each coast and throughout northern
Canada. As the cyclists experience the stories, culture and heritage of
Canada, they will share those discoveries with students on an interactive
web site at www.chij.com . As they journey, the cycling teams will be
stopping at 75 host schools. During the day of the team's visit those
schools will host the CHIJ web site, and their students will post projects,
prepared in advance, about their community. In order to gather this
information students went out into the community, and talked to seniors,
artists and local politicians. Many schools not on the cycling routes are
