SHORT BITES:
9903-1 Visual Arts Alberta Association - Guidelines on Donations - for
example if an artist is donating work to a charitable organization for
their collection - (these guidelines do not apply to Cultural Property)
1. The artist and organization agree on the artwork designated for donation;
2. An independent appraiser, such as the gallery, which deals with that
artist's work, verifies the value of the work, in writing. But, for a work
valued at under $1000 a statement by the artist may suffice. If an
appraiser is not used the organization can assess the value of the artist's
work by visiting the gallery where the artist is represented. For work
valued at $1000 or more a written independent appraisal is required by
Revenue Canada;
3. The organization should also receive from the artist a document which
declares that the artist is donating this work free and clear to the
organization for its art collection. Some agreements include statements
such as: The artist agrees to transfer any and all rights and interests in
the copyright for any future use of the artwork to the organization. The
organization agrees to appropriately acknowledge the artist in all
publications of the work;
4. The organization issues a tax-receipt to the artist for the value of the
work donated;
5. The artist must declare the value of that donation as income, for income
tax purposes, as if the art had in fact been sold for the appraised value.
The artists may deduct any costs associated with the creation of the work
and may also claim the appraised value as a donation.
(Guidelines on Donation was developed by VAAA in cooperation with Thomson &
Company, Chartered Accountants of Edmonton, AB. VAAA provides this
information in the form of guidelines, for more specific information
consult either Revenue Canada or a knowledgeable accountant)

John and Virginia Friesen, in 1998, donated a number of prints and original
works by Canadian First Nation's artists to the Red Deer & District Museum.
The donation includes works from Ojibway artists from northwestern Ontario
such as Lloyd Kakepetum and Robert Kakegamic, Garry Meeches of the Salteaux
Nation in Manitoba, and Blood artist Henry Standing Alone from Southern
Alberta. Selections of the donation are on display at the Museum until
March 21. (Red Deer & District Museum Newsletter. March-May 1999)

Thanks to monies received from the Region #58 Community Lottery Board, the
federal Museums Assistance Program and the Red Deer & District Museum
Society, the Red Deer & District Museum has progressed in the installation
of new compact storage units. These units are custom made and designed
specifically for the requirements of the Museum's art and textile
collection. Vertical rolled textile and art storage units allow
accommodation of the existing volume, future growth of the collection as
well as increasing access. (Red Deer & District Museum Newsletter.
