Kristine,

An unsurprising response. You fall into the same semantic trap that some of
my other colleagues do.

No, I have never seen a subatomic particle on my own. Niether have I seen
Australia or the Aurora Borealis. Not having seen or experienced something
is irrelevant to its existence. We are not playing with Schroedinger's
kitty.

And yes, I can explain the intricacies of the Big Bang theory to you if you
would like.

I do not BELIEVE these things exist. The scientific evidence supports their
existence. That is not faith; it is science and logic.

Faith is defined as the belief in something that has no substantive
reality, and which can not be demonstrated through science or logic. We can
demonstrate the existence of subatomic particles even if we can not see
them, therefore not faith. We can not demonstrate the existence of a higher
power, therefore faith.

Failure to realize the error of conflating science and faith in order to
propose "truth" is distressingly common. Science does not deal in truths,
only facts based on testing and research. Only philosophy can tell us
anything about truth.

Well of course you do. Have you ever seen a subatomic particle on your
own?
Can you explain the intricacies of the Big Bang theory (quick, no peeking)?

For the most part you experience science through textbooks, websites, the
news, what other people tell you, not your own firsthand experience. So
you're going on faith aren't you? Many anthropologists consider modern
science to be nothing more than a new religion. The belief that there is
not a god is just as faith-based as the belief that there is. But you'd
have to take a wider view and get beyond your own beliefs as indisputable
"Truth" in order to see that. I'm surprised that more people don't
recognize that our secular society indoctrinates just as ferociously as any
religion! I guess it's just hard to see when you're the one being
indoctrinated.
