Cristin,
I have forwarded your question onto our conservators here at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. The museum recently restoration a rare birch bark canoe belonging to the National University of Ireland in Galway. Since May 2007, conservators at the Museum painstaking undertook the conservation of a six-metre Maliseet watercraft, possibly the oldest canoe of its kind in the world.
The canoe has since returned to Ireland.
I think we can safely say we are a centre of expertise in this area.
Google Canadian Museum of Civilization + birch bark canoe + Ireland" for further details.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] birch bark canoes
Does anyone have experience with the "care and feeding" of birch bark canoes in their collections? We are looking for information about how you maintain them as collections objects, what particular preservation or conservation issues they may have, and also how you transport them. We are potentially facing a situation where we would be moving one by truck from another town about 4 hours away, and we would also be moving the canoe on and off exhibit once it's here. If anyone has any experience or expertise with this type of object, I'd very much like to hear from you.
Thank you!
