Hello!

In response to Lisa's query about who chairs committees -- I am most
familiar with the system in which the Board members participate on
committees (either by assignment or volunteering) representing each major
department of an organization (e.g., education, marketing, finance,
conservation, retail...). Each committee has a Chair that is a Board
member. The staff liaison to that committee is often the senior person of
that department or area. For example, an oranization might have five Board
members on the Education Committee with one of those five members appointed
as Chair. If the Education Department has a vice president as its senior
leader, then that individual would be the staff liasion to the Education
Committee of the Board. If the Education Department had as its most senior
position a director, then that individual would be the department liasion to
the committee. Has seemed to work rather well!
