To Don Meyers and others interested in the topic:

Apparently in Canada giving artists good lighting, neatly printed labels, a
resume boost, and a generous invitation to their own exhibition's opening
reception does not qualify as due compensation!

I thought it might be of interest to some of you that in Canada, according to
it's Copyright Act (RSC 1985, c.C-42, as amended) of 1988, which applies to
artists' works that were created after June 8, 1988, artists have what are
called "Exhibition Rights." The exhibition right entitles artists to receive
payment when their work is exhibited in a "public exhibition" other than for sale
or hire (maps and charts are excluded). Canada is one of very few countries
that have incorporated this right into their Copyright Act.

There is a brief article on what the fees should apply, and a recent new
schedule proposed by the national artists' lobby, and recently under consideration
by the Canadian Museums Association, on this Canadian Museums Association
webpage:

http://www.museums.ca/Cma1/WhatsNew/Advocacy/2004/carfaccmafees.htm

The fees in use are adjusted according to a schedule that takes into
consideration the public institution's budget. I think the concept will surprise many
of you, and the suggested fees will STUN those of you who think artists should
be happy, satisfied, and deeply grateful to simply have their work hung on a
public wall!

In many countries, visual artists are regarded as professionals, and are
considered to be much more highly valued contributors to culture than in the U.S.
