Indeed, it has been an interesting thread. It's not about "extra-curricular"
activities. The point was, that just because a child doesn't WANT to do
something or go somewhere it doesn't mean that it's okay to let them have
their way. The previous lister stated "Obviously
to drag a kid who does not like museums to museums is not a good move, but
that is precisely where a parent usually makes a bad decision."

Some kids don't believe that going to school is their job. To some, it's a
boring waste of time. Simply, because they are not wise enough to know that
it is the core of their future. Especially in the teenage years when some
feel and truly believe that they have all the answers and that the parents
are just "old fogies" that are put on earth to unnerve them. So what does
one do? Say, "Okay, you don't like school/museums/work/libraries you don't
have to go?"

Children should be dragged to anything that will help them learn. You are
correct when you say manners are the key. Self respect and the respect of
others are also very important. Children learn those basics from their
parents. And bratty kids are not at all endearing to any parent. If
anything, most parents (not all) are extremely embarrassed by bratty
behavior. But of course, only a parent would know something like that.
