The greatest compliment I received back in my undergraduate days was from an
historian of European History, who taught the core requirement. She was an
excellent scholar and she told me that I was well-read. When I asked how she
knew--she replied "because you are an artist," as if it was a given. When I
later thought about it, it's true, any artist I know is a book junkie,
myself included. We are forever collecting books--old books, exhibit
catalogues, books on every medium, biographies, etc.
My mentor is an artist and art historian, so I guess I followed in his
footsteps, because I teach college-level art history and studio classes as
an adjunct.The advice I received was, get an MA rather than an MFA. In the
northeast, there are a lot of MFA's and you can do more with the MA because
it is a broader degree. So far I think I made a good decision. By the way,
the community college where I teach added an art history major about 5 years
ago which I found almost amusing at the time. Well, to my surprise there
are a lot of art history majors attending and they all have to take my
Non-Western art history class. So when I am showing those slides, think of
the things I can cover from both directions.

Once you leave academia the boundaries between fine arts and art history
blurr (thank goodness!). In my career, I have found some incredible arts
administrators (great writers, great finance minds) who were also amazingly
good artists. And, on the other hand, I know of a few art historians who
make
their living as artists!
