I'm in concurrence with the other comments on board rotation to keep a board
balanced and nimble. However, whether an organization proceeds with
rotation or a lack thereof, it must be in accordance with the organizational
bylaws. The suggestions for keeping a valuable board member active
following their term end are on the money.

To help with the recruiting process and the concept of rotation, it is
always wise to have a sense of the "age" of your board. You don't want your
entire institutional memory to rotate off simultaneously. A good
recruitment plan will keep rotation staggered. We cover the importance of
the board life cycle and provide a tool for tracking it in the MTA
publication Building Museum Boards. This electronic template includes
essential recruitment materials such as a timeline/calendar for the
nominations process, board profiles, board contracts, and an orientation
that are designed to be customized to fit your institution.
