Just to keep this list international ;) 
Here in Jerusalem we recently had round 2 of our public lions project - lions are the symbol of Jerusalem. They were so popular in 2002 that a new batch has been commissioned from local artists and art groups to scatter around the city. Below are some links with pictures and information on the project:

I recently heard the lions are touring the US. 

PS. Tel Aviv had penguins, dolphins, and most recently public benches - all to be sold afterwards to public bidders.
