"The Fabric of Heritage Buildings",  March 4 - 13, 1998

To preserve heritage buildings, it is necessary to understand the
construction techniques and materials which give them their special
character. This course examines building styles and structural
elements encountered in historic wood and masonry buildings, and
develops your knowledge of:
o       research, investigation, and recording
o       planning, organizing, and documenting the conservation process
o       approaches to preservation and adaptation
o       upgrading tocontemporary building and seismic standards
o       maintenance cycles
o       disaster planning

A variety of architectural resources and conservation projects in the
Victoria area provide a focus for case studies and field work.
Instructors: Stuart Stark is a heritage building consultant with
extensive experience in conservation and restoration projects ranging
from private residences to national historic sites; Robert Patterson
is an engineer, specializing in heritage preservation

Dates: March 4-13

Fee: $589 (credit or non-credit, Canadian funds)
Travel: Victoria is easily accessible by air or ferry from both
Vancouver and Seattle
