THE NORTH CAROLINA POTTERY CENTER seeks an executive director to oversee
development, programs, and operations. The Center has concluded a
successful capital campaign and will construct a permanent new facility
in 1997 with potential to become a national and international resource
for potters.

MISSION: Pottery making in North Carolina is among the oldest and most
diverse ceramic traditions in the country. It encompasses Native
American coil pottery, rich English and German-based folk traditions, and
a thriving community of studio potters supported by institutions such as
Penland School of Crafts and John C. Campbell Folk School. The Center
promotes public awareness and appreciation of the history and vitality of
these traditions through permanent exhibitions and other educational
programs, collection and preservation, visitor services, research, and
documentation.

LOCATION: A ten-acre site in Seagrove, North Carolina will be the
permanent home of the new facility, scheduled for construction in 1997.
Seagrove, a village in the NC Piedmont about 35 miles south of
Greensboro, is on one of the state's scenic byways. It is the hub of a
region with a dynamic and unbroken history of pottery production since
the 18th century. More than 80 potteries within a 15-mile radius attract
over 100,000 visitors each year.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Carry out the Center's mission with initial emphasis on development of
educational programs for potters, students, and the general public.
* Coordinate fundraising, promotion, and development of volunteers.
* Organize and supervise the Center's staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:
* A bachelor's or higher degree in museum administration or related field
with a minimum of two years' work experience.
* Experience in planning, organizing, and implementing museum educational
programs and exhibitions.
* Ability to communicate effectively with the board, membership, staff,
volunteers, the community of potters, the general public, sponsors and
contributors, and the media.
* Willingness to work in a small southern town with up to 100,000
visitors each year.
* Knowledge of the history and technology of ceramics.
* Ability to manage business and computer operations.

SALARY: $35,000 -- $45,000 based on experience

APPLICATION DEADLINE: October 1, 1996

START DATE: January 1, 1997 or earlier
