Exhibitions and Case Design: Integrating Preservation in Planning

Presented by the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts
(CCAHA)

Thursday, December 6, 2007

Philadelphia, PA

Cosponsored and hosted by the Chemical Heritage Foundation

About the Program

Viewers peering into exhibit cases see displayed artifacts and objects
but do not witness the long planning and installation process that
culminates in the finished exhibit. This program will give your
institution tools to ensure that your visitors see safely mounted
objects in a secure, controlled environment. Presenters, who include
exhibit designers, conservators, and fabricators, will discuss exhibit
development, best practices for collections care of objects on display,
and other preservation considerations when mounting exhibitions in
cases. Concepts presented will be applicable to a variety of small and
mid-size institutions.

The inclusion of preventive conservation combines both preservation and
aesthetic considerations in the exhibit planning process. The selection
of appropriate objects for exhibition, choosing safe exhibit materials
and isolation barriers, controlling pollutants, creating optimal
environmental conditions, and monitoring and maintaining exhibits after
installation will be defined and discussed. Case studies will
demonstrate the concepts presented and a speakers' panel will address
additional audience questions.

This program is intended for curators, librarians, archivists,
collection managers, exhibition designers, preparators, conservators,
and other staff who are involved in exhibition design and installation
in cultural institutions.
