Erica,
There are LOTS of good resources for understanding WHY people volunteer.
This is the key to effectively recruiting dependable, long-term docents.
(I was a 10-year docent.) One way to start is to survey your current
docents on why they volunteer at your establishment.  The Independent
Sector website also provides a survey of volunteering in America.  I have
additional materials I could forward if you can contact me off list.  This
is an area of particular interest to me, so I have lots of links and some
things to fax.
