Most business people I know would jump at the chance to get anything needed
for their operation at a reduced rate or free and would not suffer pangs of
conscience if they succeded. The same is true for non-profits. It's only
good business practice to try to reduce your expenses whenever & wherever
possible.

Local businesses, being businesses, always have the option of saying no, and
most will do so when they feel a request is inappropriate or ill-timed from
their particular viewpoint. But don't forget that all businesses,
non-profit & for-profit, benefit from public exposure of their good deeds
and this is what offsets the "expense" Trent mentions.

Subject: Re: Why Buy the Shovels?

Not to beat a dead horse!

I think you guys have missed the point. The original post wanted to know
where to get the shovels not how to finance their purchase. There were many
good suggestions on how to get the shovels that were being requested. Then,
in a spirit that I find all too common in the non-profit world, some said
hey why buy shovels when you can get them for free. I do not have a problem
with non-profits asking for help when it is needed. I do have a problem
with non-profits that want to get everything for free at the expensive of
local businesses.
