The Smithsonian American Art Museum is pleased to announce that Susanneh Bieber, an assistant professor in the departments of visualization and architecture at Texas A&M University, is the winner of the 2017 Terra Foundation for American Art International Essay Prize. Bieber's award-winning essay, "Going Back to Kansas City: The Origins of Judd's Minimal Art," will appear in a forthcoming issue of American Art, the peer-reviewed journal co-published by the museum and the University of Chicago Press.

The Terra International Essay Prize recognizes excellent research in the field of historical American art (ca. 1500-1980) by a scholar who is not a citizen of the United States. The winning manuscript should advance the understanding of American art and demonstrate new findings and original perspectives. The prize winner is given the opportunity to work toward publication in American Art, which also arranges and pays for all image rights and reproductions. The winner receives a $1,000 cash award and a travel stipend of up to $3,500 to give a presentation in Washington, D.C., and meet with museum staff and fellows. The prize is supported by funding from the Terra Foundation for American Art.

The next prize will be awarded in 2019.
