Just in the beginning a nice story: It had been thhe wellknown Theodor
Herzl who lit on the lights on his christmas tree, calling the tree
("Baum") "Chanukkabaum". This happened on a 24th of Dec., the day, we
have Christmas eve.

We use "Christmas," but personally I'm not thrilled with it.

Christmas is not a thrill. It is a symbol of hope for all mankind. So,
if you do need hope at all, nobody can urge you to feel different during
these upcoming days.

Although
Christmas might "sell" better than "Happy Holidays,"

We should not take use words like "what sells better" in this context.
Christmas does not "sell". For the one understanding it, it has nothing
to do with commercial thinking or marketing.

Christmas sells to
a particular audience.

Why not interest other audiences?

How is someone who doesn't celebrate Christmas
supposed to understand that your museum's programs and exhibitions do
not focus exclusively on Christmas?

It depends on the title of the exhibition and the exhibition is made.

Would that person feel welcome, or
encouraged to attend?

Why not? It depends again on the way the exhibition is made. Christians
are not a secluded secret clan.

I'd be really curious to hear from museums that have changed program
titles to "Happy Holidays" and what impact that had on their audiences.

Best,
George Garner

Celebrate Ethnic Heritage Month in November at the Center for History
with a tour of our historic houses, including the Worker's Home, and a
visit to our exhibition /International Trees/.
