Hi Kathy

I was lucky enough to do a survey of Pompeii over three days for my BA
course, back in 2000, and I have to say that even those 3 days were not
enough to see everything there. We also got to visit the museum in Naples,
and although the museum is very nice, it does not give you the same sense of
wonder that Pompeii does. The site is absolutely huge and there are many
wonderful things to see, and it is also very, very easy to get lost there,
so my suggestion would be to take the guided tour. However, if you go for the
other option, there is a very good book on sale in the shop at the main
entrance (I don't have the name and title to hand, but can get it if you
like) that offers you 3 routes through the site, depending on what you want
to see, and explains everything along the way.

If you would like to broaden your experience of the vesuvius event, I would
suggest that you also go to see the site of Herculaneum. The town was
effected in a different way than Pompeii when the volcano erupted and has
been preserved in a different way - there are two story buildings still
standing.

I hope that helps!

Subject: National Archaeological Museum of Naples/Pompeii?

Hi all,

I know, I know... I am asking travel advice.

Does anyone know anything about the National Archaeological Museum of
Naples/Pompeii?

I will be there in June and have my choice of being on a guided tour of
Pompeii (Sorrento - cheese and wine & lunch on own) OR a self-guided tour of
Pompeii and then see the museum (pizza and Naples). I am torn. The time
differences are about the same, so is the price.

Kathy.
