Qualifications:

  *   A Bachelor's degree or higher in History, Anthropology, Architectural History, Archives/Archival Management, Historic Preservation, Library Science, Museum Education, Museum Studies, Public Administration or other related field with extensive senior-level management experience in a state historical society, statewide history agency, or other similar multi-faceted cultural institution.
  *   Ability to develop and implement an agency strategic long rang plan including the implementation of agency policies, goals and objectives.
  *   Ability to deal effectively with political and agency relations.
  *   Experience with, and working knowledge of, the State Historic Preservation Officer's role in historic preservation and related state and federal regulations.
  *   Experience with budget development and management.
  *   Experience with and working knowledge of, board support and interaction.
  *   Experience with the state legislative process, including testifying in front of the state legislature.
  *   Experience with public appearances and presentations.

Job Summary:
The Director is the chief administrative and executive officer of the State Historical Society of North Dakota and serves at the pleasure of the State Historical Board. This state agency head position is responsible for administration of the State Historical Society of North Dakota under state law, administrative rules, and governance policies adopted by the State Historical Board. The duties of the Director are prescribed by law in North Dakota Century Code Chapter 55.

Responsibilities Include:


  *   Administer all programs and day-to-day operations in connection with the executive team to accomplish the agency goals and objectives including employing and supervising all employees and implementing policies and directives of the State Historical Board.
  *   Represent the Society on a statewide, national, and international level to all outside entities.
  *   Serve as the North Dakota Historic Preservation Officer.
  *   Serves on committees and commissions as defined by the North Dakota Century Code or by authorization of the Governor and/or State Historical Board.
  *   Represent the Society to the Society Foundation and individual support Groups. Liaison would include advising on fund-raising strategies and targets, public appearances and presentations, and developing appropriate expenditure targets for the State Historical of North Dakota Foundation and local support groups for individual state historic sites or projects.
  *   Performs other duties as may be required by law or as assigned by the State Historical Board.
