There are systems of lighting trusses that can be raised and lowered as
you describe but I have not seen it in a track system. That does not
mean it doesn't exist, though. There are numerous lighting consultants
that could specify such a system for a new or renovating building, but
adding it without major demolition work is likely to be very difficult.

Subject: Re: [MUSEUM-L] Ceiling Height

Greetings

This raises an interesting question in my mind.

I wonder if anyone has heard of, seen, knows of a multi-functional
gallery space with a 16 or 20 foot high ceiling with a drop ceiling with
built-in track lighting that can be lowered (pulley and/or motor?) to 12
feet for a more intimate space for installations? Assuming the "real"
ceiling beams can support the weight, the supporting cable, pulley
and/or motor system, track lighting, and electrical wiring should be
possible to install. Of course, this may not be economically feasible
or may be crazy to try to pull off . . .

Best wishes,
