Join Bill Barkley and other established museum professionals from across
Canada for regular interactive Thursday afternoon online 'conversations'
in a new forum called Learning Circles, hosted by the Cultural Resource
Management Program at the University of Victoria. Discussions start in
January 2006.

Learning Circles: Towards Community Engagement

An online learning opportunity

Explore the opportunities and challenges inherent in the move to more
socially responsible roles for museums and share in perspectives on the
significant shift in the ways in which museums relate and respond to
communities. This six-week series of one-hour online interactive
sessions both builds on the expertise of the facilitator and draws on
the experiences of participants and the challenges facing cultural
institutions.

Suggested discussion themes include, but are not limited to:

* Museums as social change agents

* The role of museums in building human and social capital

* Changing dynamics and trends in museum management

As a participant in Learning Circles, you contribute to weekly
discussions and provide suggestions for new discussion themes for later
in the Learning Circles series.

Dates: Thursday afternoons from 3:00 to 4:00 pm (Pacific Standard Time,)
from January 26 to March 2, 2006

Fee: CDN$120 plus GST

Facilitator: Bill Barkley is one of Canada's most respected
museologists. Barkley is a Fellow of the Canadian Museum Association and
Chair of the Virtual Museums of Canada Editorial Board. His list of past
experiences includes Chief Executive Officer at the Royal British
Columbia Museum, President of the Canadian Museums Association,
President of the Victoria AM Tourist Association, Academic Advisor for
the Cultural Resource Management Program at University of Victoria and
President of Interpretation Canada.

Technology Requirements: To participant in Learning Circles you will
need a computer with a microphone, speakers, and Internet access. No
special software is needed to participate in the sessions, but some
participants may need to download a new Java script before logging into
the Learning Circles website. Technical assistance will be available in
advance of the Learning Circle session each week.

During each session, you will be required to log-in to a dedicated
course website. The website uses a new interactive program called
Elluminate. Elluminate allows the whole group to talk and share written
and electronic information, to open websites and documents, and to
interact with Bill and other participants in real-time, regardless of
Internet speed.

This opportunity is open to professionals involved in museums, heritage,
science and cultural centres, and art galleries. Register online at
