This is a very interesting situation.  I agree with Ms. Oliver about simply
returning the material if you have a good address for this person.  I had a
simlar situation -- though with a lender who would not answer our letters,
despite the fact that we had a good address -- and finally, we just decided
to carefully pack and ship the material (which was not really monetarily,
but sentimentally valuable), insured of course, to the lender.  We also sent
them a letter to tell them it was coming (not certified).   It's an enormous
risk, I suppose, but in certain cases may be the only alternative.   I think
this method should only be used in extreme cases, but in the case of the
former employee, it may be the next step.
