Apologies for Cross Postings:

What: Museum Intern

Where: The Mount Washington Observatoryıs Weather Discovery Center in North
Conway New Hampshire. The Mount Washington Observatory has been observing
weather phenomenon since 1932 on the summit of the tallest mountain in the
Northeast. On April 12, 1934 a wind of 231 mph was recorded on Mount
Washington, a record that still stands as the highest recorded wind speed in
the world. This and other factors have given Mount Washington the dubious
distinction of being the home of the worldıs worst weather.

The Weather Discovery Center (WDC) is the Observatoryıs newest educational
project. It is a state-of-the-art museum dedicated to the study of weather
and the history of the Mount Washington Observatory and the White Mountains.
Opening in May of 2000 the WDC is a hands-on, interactive learning
experience designed for visitors of all ages. Exhibits run the gamut from
high-tech computer interactives to simulations to more traditional history
exhibits. The Observatory also has another museum on the summit of Mount
Washington itself.

Job Description: The WDC is looking for an intern primarily to help design,
conduct, and interpret visitor studies projects in its new museum. However,
as with many small museums, the intern will be asked to take on other
responsibilities as needed. These can possibly be tailored to match intern's
interest. These duties include, but arenıt limited to, researching and
writing exhibit labels, designing educational programs, giving tours,
writing and creating web content, and other, less creative tasks, necessary
to keep a small museum running.

Qualifications: The right candidate should be interested in pursuing, or has
begun pursuing, a degree or career in museum studies. The candidate should
have excellent communication skills, experience with spread sheets, word
processing, and graphics programs, and a knowledge of or interest in the
weather, meteorology, science, local history, or the White Mountains. An
ability to speak in public is desirable.

Payment: This internship pays $8 per hour and a successful intern should
work between 20-30 hours per week during Spring 2001, although the exact
schedule is flexible. There are no benefits associated with this position.
