This is always a nice questions. Let us not consider the normal
construction costs, because any architect will give you the figure
depending on the number of marble and strange forms ....

The next issue is the moment, when the museum building is finished and you
install the exhibition galleries.

The next issue comes when you have to consider: do I have all the objects
or do I have to buy them. Art museums are the most expensive, when you have
to buy the objects. If you have to create a science museum with new
interactive objects - this will be very expensive, but less then al the art
pieces.

The second main difference is the kind of museum.

I have a database of more than hundred museums, NOT art museums. The cost
range widely: from 100 $ to 10.000 $ per square meter (10 squ. Ft. are
approx. 1 suq. meter). The mean value for all those museums "with
artifacts" (no art) is US $ 1.000.- with a statistical variant of again US
$ 1.000.
Museums like La Villette in Paris took more than 6.000 $ per squ. meter,
also the Museum of Television and Radio in New York was quite expensive
(marble elevators, but nearly no visitors compared to their place in the
middle of the city).

But, I think that the main Austrian Casino took more than 15.000 $ for
renovation.

Does it really help????

greetings from Austria

I'm wondering if anyone has approximate figures for square footage costs
for new museum construction. I'm looking for a general, overall cost per
square foot. I realize there may be wide discrepancies depending upon the
kind of museum and what's included, but I would appreciate any replies.
Please mention the general size of the museum and any other qualifications.
Thanks.
