Position Announcement: Chief Curator, National Law Enforcement Museum,
Washington, DC (nleomf.com)

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) has reached an
exciting point in its plans for physical and programmatic growth during this
decade. The NLEOMF is seeking a visionary and experienced Chief Curator to
guide its collecting activities and inform the process of exhibit
development for the planned National Law Enforcement Museum.

In November 2000, a law passed by the United States Congress and signed by
President Clinton authorized the NLEOMF to construct, own and operate the
National Law Enforcement Museum across the street from the Memorial in the
historic Judiciary Square area of Washington, DC. Subsequently, the NLEOMF
assembled a team of nationally renowned design and museum consultants to
help plan and build the Museum. As of this time, design work continues with
an anticipated opening of the Museum in 2009.

The Chief Curator will partner with NLEOMF Executive Staff and the Museum’s
planning and design team to finalize planning for the Museum and
implementation of this expansion and further programmatic refinement. The
Chief Curator will have primary responsibility for three major areas: 1)
identifying and securing collections to support the Museum’s planned
permanent and temporary exhibits; 2) development and oversight of the
collections, including policy development and implementation for permanent
donations and temporary loans, collections care, and planned growth of the
collections; and 3) development and supervision of a supporting staff for
the registration, conservation and storage of the collections, and
maintenance of the exhibits.

The Chief Curator will work closely with the Museum’s exhibit design
consultant to help shape and inform the exhibit content. Subsequently, the
Chief Curator will secure the objects and archival materials that will help
illuminate the exhibit content, while rooting the exhibits in authenticity.
The Chief Curator will conduct research, interpret artifacts and archival
materials, and consult with the exhibit design team on appropriate levels of
conservation, mounting, security and display.

As a member of the Museum’s management team, the Chief Curator will
participate in strategic planning and decision making, and will serve as a
spokesperson for the Museum, participating in marketing and publicity and
representing the Museum within the museum community at scholarly, public and
social events.

This position requires a minimum of 7 years experience as a chief curator,
curator, registrar, or collections manager for a public or private museum.
Applicants must demonstrate their success in exhibit planning, collections
management, scholarly research and publication, and personnel and budget
supervision. A high level of knowledge of the history of American law
enforcement and the American judicial system is desired. A Masters Degree
in museum studies or a closely related field is required.

An attractive and competitive compensation and benefits package is available
to the candidate who can demonstrate their desire to take on a serious role
in leading the development of this world-class Museum. Applicants should
submit a letter of application, résumé, vitae and three references to:
Thomas P. Gallagher, Project Manager, The E and G Group, Suite 200, 1350
Beverly Rd., McLean, VA 22101. The closing date for submission is October
15, 2005. Applications may also be submitted electronically to Tom
Gallagher at: [log in to unmask] Please direct all questions to E
and G Group. Please do not send any materials to the address that originated
