I don't have an answer as to whether or not you should indicate that you
would like a permanent position with the institution you're currently
volunteering at, but I do have some suggestions about contacting employers.
Generally, unless there are special circumstances, I would say that you
should only contact once after the initial application. Make sure that the
application and resume you are submitting are the best possible
representations of yourself, then contact once to thank them for the
opportunity; your resume and politeness will speak for itself. Then, if you
are selected for an interview, make sure to send a thank you note or e-mail,
and make it clear that even if you do not get the current position, you
would love to be considered for others in the future.
