DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS

Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA

 

The Director of Communications for the Hammer Museum is responsible for
directing the Museum's communications activities, initiatives, and
strategies, with the goal of enhancing the Museum's public image and
visibility and increasing Museum attendance and support among diverse
audiences and constituencies.  The primary areas of responsibility are
the creation, development, implementation, management, and oversight of
a proactive and comprehensive program of media and public relations that
generates press and publicity for the Museum's broad range of
exhibitions, public programs, collections, events, and other
initiatives; and the conceptualization, design, development,
implementation, production, and general oversight of highly effective
promotional and marketing tools and strategies, including quarterly
calendars, promotional materials, and regularly changing and rotating
building and wayfinding signage.

 

The Director of Communications reports to the Museum Director,
supervises communications and design staff, is a member of the senior
management team, and works in close collaboration with other Museum
managers and staff in numerous departments, including curatorial,
education, development, membership, special events, bookstore and
administration.  The Director of Communications is the Museum's liaison
to the Communications Director for the UCLA School of the Arts and
Architecture and to the University's Public Information Office.

 

Minimum five to seven years experience in directing museum or nonprofit
communications at a senior level, including print and electronic media;
demonstrated success creating, developing, and implementing effective
media and promotional strategies, plans, and campaigns; strong and
proven relationships with national and local arts editors and reporters;
track record of interacting effectively with media contacts;
demonstrated success in developing and cultivating working relationships
with media contacts, donors, public, and staff; exceptional ability to
write for a wide variety of communications materials; excellent
interpersonal and oral/written communication skills; ability to juggle
multiple priorities and conflicting deadlines in a fast-paced and
rapidly changing environment.
